‘Returning Heritage Boats to the water’

At Rescue Wooden Boats, situated in the former Officers’ Mess at the Old Military Camp in Stiffkey, you can learn about the people, boats and skills that contributed to the maritime heritage of North Norfolk.

Discover the story of Dunkirk veteran and local lifeboat Lucy Lavers, and learn about her recent restoration and 2015 return to Dunkirk with the Little Ships, to commemorate 75 years since Operation Dynamo.

Watch our films which capture the stories of the last generation of fisherman and lifeboat men to use wooden boats.

View our fishing artefacts and photographs – and see if you can make a fishing net! View work in progress on our current boat restoration project.

Find out more about the fascinating ‘whirly gig’ in our small display on the history of the Military Camp.
